Kingsport BOE says 'No' to homeschoolers and extracurricular activities

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Kingsport Board of Education said 'No' to homeschoolers when they asked to be included in the school system's extracurricular activities.

In Tennessee alone there are nearly 30,000 homeschooled students. That ranks 16th in the country.

Russ Rogers is the head of the Northeast Tennessee Home Educators Association. He says homeschoolers just want the option. "We're actually pursuing it because the homeschoolers have asked us to. There's a lot of talented homeschool kids out there and they have some really big opportunities. So a lot of the big scouts, they won't know to come to a homeschool game and watch these guys."

Sonya Haskins teaches all five of her children at home. She says, "Its really not fair, as far as getting to pursue athletic interest. I pay the same taxes as everybody and my money goes to the public school system. Well I don't get any advantage out of that money. I get no benefit whatsoever."

Rogers says there are more opportunities now than ever before. "We have kids that have gone on to King and some other schools here locally that have gone on scholarship to play basketball."
