Local Man Wrongly Receives Five Red Light Camera Citations

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Red light cameras have been a source of controversy in our region, since the first one was installed a few years ago.

Now, a local man has received five red light tickets from Kingsport and Johnson City, but he is responsible for none of the violations.

David Jones showed 11Connects the five red light camera citations he has received since last Summer.

All of the tickets show the same car running red lights, but the problem is, the car running the red lights is not his.

According to Jones, "I try to stay away from the cameras as much as possible."

Even though he tried to stay away from camera enforced intersections, David Jones started receiving red light violation tickets last June.

"I was thinking why...why am I getting this?" ,said Jones.

Jones saw right away there were errors on the tickets. The car in violation is silver, his is blue, and the license plate numbers weren't even close.

All the tickets had two different addresses on them, both addresses belong to two different men named David Jones.

Jones asked, "How can I get it corrected, and is it going to happen again?"

Jones had to visit the Johnson city and Kingsport Police Departments in order to get the tickets dismissed, but if this happens to you, what should you do?

According to Johnson City Police Department Major Mark Sirois, "What they would need to do is call Johnson City Police Records at 434-6125, and what we'll do is verify the information, the owner information. If that checks out we'll just go ahead and dismiss the citation for that person."

Kingsport Police Patrol Officer Dale Farmer added,  "Accidents can happen, its very rarely, but they do happen. If they will contact the traffic unit, or the records division, what we can do, we'll go back in, correct any mistakes. If there is a mistake made, we will correct it in a very quick, timely manner for them."

Police dismissed Jones' tickets.  They are now looking to serve those citations on the "David Jones" that ran the red lights.

Officers say this situation is probably due to a data mix-up at the state Department of Safety.

Just a note to remember about red light camera violations. If you do get a ticket, and don't pay it, it can affect your insurance, and your credit score.
