Tis the season of giving...and one little girl in the tri-cities is taking the concept to heart.
Eight-year-old Abby Leonard from Bristol Virginia told her mom she wanted to give all the money her family would have spent on Christmas presents for her to the Niswonger Children's Hospital.
Tonight, we report little Abby’s very big heart.
We’ve all heard the phrase it’s better to give than receive. But do we always put it into practice?
At just eight years of age, Abby is proof that sometimes, we do.
“Giving my toys to them makes them forget what they have and make them feel happier and forget what's going on and make it less scarier,” Abby says.
When Abby’s mother asked her what she wanted to Christmas, the girl picked out one toy
“And I said is that it?,” Leonard says. “That was 40 bucks.”
“She said no [more presents ]. I want to take all my money that my papaws, aunts, uncles, family, friends give me and I want to hopefully take all that money and give it to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital.”
“I feel happy helping other kids,” the girl says.
Abby's mom Dionne Slaughter says her little girl is always looking for ways to help others.
“She’s just always had that heart of gold,” said Slaughter. “I sometimes look at her and say wow, have I really raised this child.”
In total, Abby donated $325 to the children’s hospital – an amount of money Abby says she couldn’t have been happier to give away.
“I feel proud” she says,” happy that I’m doing it and hope I could help another kid.”
Abby says she hopes the money will be spent to buy presents for kids at hospital...gifts like coloring books, toys and hair bows.
