As part of the ‘ExtenZe Local Hero’ program, 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie-of-the-Year driver Kevin Conway is stepping up to assist the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department (SCSD) in the unsolved Kingsport, Tenn. murder case of James Hutson. Conway’s No. 87 ExtenZe Toyota will carry the images of Hutson along with SCSD contact information on the car’s deck lid for the Food City 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 26.
In the early morning hours of September 6, 1997 officers with the SCSD responded to a home on Rock Springs Road in Kingsport. The caller, Mary Lou Hutson, James’ mother, advised dispatchers that a man had raped her and stabbed her son. When officers arrived at the home they found 17 year old James Hutson dead with stab wounds all over his body. Mary Lou Hutson survived the incident but passed away about a year after her son’s death. Since her rape and the murder of her son detectives have spent countless hours following numerous leads, but those leads have not panned out. James also left behind a brother and two sisters whom all hope and pray for closure one day soon.
“This case has eluded us for way too long,” said Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Bobby Russell. “We are coming up on the 14th anniversary of this case and are hoping someone will see this race car carrying the image of James Hutson on TV or in the news and will come forward to give us the missing information we need to solve this case. We think it is tremendous what ExtenZe Racing and NEMCO Motorsports are doing to assist us in this case and can't thank them enough.”
Detectives are hoping someone out there will step forward and provide them with the missing information they need to help lead them to the person responsible for raping Mary Lou Hutson and murdering James Hutson. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office at 423.279.7506 or email at tips@scsotn.com.
“At ExtenZe and NEMCO Motorsports we like to do our part to give back to the communities and markets we race in and couldn’t be more thrilled to help out and honor the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department with the James Hutson case,” said Conway. “This case has escaped the people of Kingsport and law enforcement long enough and we just want to step up and do our part to dust off this case the best we can. With the reach and platform NASCAR gives us we hope that by carrying the image along with contact information on my car of James Hutson we will reach that one person out there that may know something that could help solve this case.”
The ‘ExtenZe Local Hero’ program pays tribute to people who have gone to great lengths to make a difference in their communities. Those selected have faced danger, sacrificed their own safety for others or in some way displayed leadership that changed their community for the better. Award recipients are eligible to become ExtenZe Racing Honorary Crew Chiefs, receive a tour of the paddock, attend the pre-race NASCAR Driver/Crew Chief meeting, and sit atop the pit box with Crew Chief Steven Gray to root on driver Kevin Conway piloting the royal blue and red No. 87 ExtenZe Toyota.
