The United Way of Russell and Washington Counties has set up a special fund that will be used to help pay for long-term recovery efforts in the areas hard hit by this week’s storms and tornadoes.

Agency Chief Executive Officer Travis Staton said Friday that anyone who wants to make a $10 donation to fund can do so by texting the word “support” to 27722. The charges will appear on their wireless bill or be deducted from their prepaid balance.

The United Way chapter already has donated $100,000 of its own money to this disaster relief fund, Staton said. Additionally, the fund has received donations totaling $90,000 from Alpha Natural Resources, Food City, Universal Fiber Systems, Bristol Virginia Utilities and First Bank and Trust.

Next week, Staton said, the United Way and Glade Spring officials will announce plans to hold a volunteer day, when they will organize rebuilding efforts with community support and labor.
