Mail processing operations will be moved from Bristol to Johnson City - according to a press release issued this afternoon by the US Postal Service.
This statement comes as a result of a study begun in September. The USPS has made the decision to move all mail processing operations from the Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee Processing and Distribution Facility to the Johnson City, Tennessee Processing and Distribution Facility.
Only mail processing operations will be transferred to Johnson City. The retail unit and PO Box section will remain open at the Bristol facility. Local mail service will not be affected by the move.
The transition will completed by October 2011.
The USPS says that "affected career employees will be reassigned to vacant positions in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements."
Appalachian District Manager Robert A. Cavinder said that the move was affected by the drastic decline in mail volume within the USPS overall.
“I understand our employees’ concern over this move,” Cavinder added, “but the consolidation makes sense given the fiscal realities. The Johnston City P&DF has the capacity to handle the additional workload and we can realize significant savings by shifting operations there.”
