Fallen power lines ignite Unicoi County wildfire

Fire crews in Unicoi County fought a wildfire in the Flag Pond community Wednesday afternoon after fallen power lines ignited the blaze.

The fallen power lines caused an arc which ignited dry leaf litter on the forest floor spreading the fire over 8 acres near Little Branch Road.

The South Side Volunteer Fire Department along with units from Erwin, Unicoi and Limestone Cove joined with members of the U.S. Forest Service to contian the flames.

Crews uesd bulldozers to create fire lines to keep the flames from spreading and the scene was brought under control shortly after 6 p.m.

The cause of the fallen power lines remains under investigation.
