Ketron Intermediate School in Sullivan County is already using an instant messaging system called School Messenger and others will also be using it. The system can send information on report cards, the date and time of an upcoming meeting at school, closings or delays and most importantly information to help keep students safe.
"Safety is the biggest issue and reason we purchased it," said Wendell Smith, assistant principal.
Director of Sullivan County Schools, Dr. Jubal Yennie said they were already making plans to use the School Messenger system before the shooting at Sullivan Central High School last month. He said from now on parents will get the information they need during emergency situations like this.
"We need to over communicate that we are taking every step we can possibly take to make safety a priority in Sullivan County Schools," Yennie said.
The School Messenger can send messages to your home phone, through a text message or even by email. A message can also be sent in another language.
The system will be available to all schools in the county on October 11.
