A $45 million funding package that will significantly expand the existing broadband network in four far Southwest Virginia localities, was announced this afternoon by U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher.
“This infrastructure is the foundation of our economic growth,” Boucher, D-9th, said during a news conference here at Town Hall.
The congressman said the money will be used to build a fiber-to-premises network capable of providing high-speed Internet service to 7,500 homes, businesses and community facilities in the city of Norton and Scott, Lee and Wise counties.
Once the project is completed, Boucher said, almost 85 percent of the homes and businesses in these four localities will have high-speed Internet access.
