BRISTOL, Va. – A Washington County sheriff’s deputy – charged Wednesday with assault and battery, and destruction of property – is now on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

Kevin Shane Wilson, 37, is accused of committing both offences against a juvenile family member Saturday, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported in a written statement on the charges.

Wilson could not be reached for comment Thursday, and no one answered the door at his trailer on Buffalo Pond Road.

In the criminal complaint filed with the Bristol Virginia Police Department, the juvenile alleged that Wilson “ripped one of my [packed] bags and picked me up by the throat and threw me to the ground.”

Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman said the juvenile obtained the warrants, and Wilson is scheduled to be in court Sept. 8 for a preliminary hearing.

Newman said he instructed Wilson to turn himself in to authorities in Bristol, and he did. The sheriff’s office has placed Wilson on administrative suspension with pay. Wilson has worked for the sheriff’s office for four years.

Bristol Police Capt. Maynard Ratcliff said Wilson was released on a $2,000 unsecured bond. Both crimes are Class 1 misdemeanors, which carry a potential penalty of a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jack Davidson described Wilson as “an excellent officer, very knowledgeable and very professional,” adding, “I have no reason to question his veracity.”

Davidson said the incident, which occurred near the Clear Creek Golf Club in Bristol, was “an issue of trying to correct her … so he’s alleging one thing and she’s alleging another.”

Asked about an assault charge that Wilson’s ex-wife filed against him years ago, Davidson said, “that was way back before he was employed by the sheriff’s office, and that was dismissed.”

Newman said the Department of Social Services is investigating the case, and Davidson said an internal investigation is being conducted.

“I think it’d be a little premature to pass judgment on the individual at this point,” Newman said. “We’re going to let the Department of Social Services do their investigation and then let the justice system run its course.”
