BRISTOL, Va. – Two men pleaded guilty Friday to a February street racing incident that claimed the life of an Abingdon nurse.
Joseph Dewayne Rose, 19, and Joshua Mark Henson, 20, appeared in circuit court and entered their pleas without an agreement from the commonwealth’s attorney’s office. They are scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 15, and face a maximum of 20 years in prison.
Melinda Woodward, a 38-year-old mother of two girls, had driven to the Sears at the Bristol Mall on Feb. 8 to return one of her daughter’s glasses. About 6 p.m., she pulled onto Gate City Highway and into the path of a Pontiac Trans Am and a Ford Mustang barrelling down the road at speeds greater than 100 mph.
Authorities allege that Rose, of Pound, Va., ran a red light and crashed his Trans Am into Woodward’s car, killing her instantly. Henson, of Bristol, Va., avoided the wreck and kept going, authorities said.
