Local food banks and non profits are working together to raise awareness on hunger in our area for Hunger Action Month.
A new study shows that more than 70,000 families in our area sought food assistance last year. That’s up 24 percent from the study 4 years ago.
Rhonda Chafin with Second Harvest Food Bank says, “Based on a hunger study over 70,500 individuals received food assistance unduplicated in our region last year.”
The food bank saw first hand how big of a problem hunger is in our area when they gave away 2 million more pounds of food last year over 2008.
Chafin says last year it was up to 6.8 million pounds and that ‘is very significant to our operation. That shows us that the demand, the need for food has grown tremendously.’
That's why the nonprofits have combined to raise local awareness and ask for your help during Hunger Action Month.
“There's some basic ways they can help. They can host a food drive. They can visit Hungeractionmonth.org and pledge to volunteer.”
