ABINGDON, Va. – The day after the announcement that both finalists for the job of superintendent of Washington County Schools had withdrawn their names, neither would say much about why.
Lee Brannon said he likes his job as superintendent of schools in Wythe County and the timing is bad for a move.
“The office of superintendent certainly intrigued me,” said Brannon, a 1977 graduate of Patrick Henry High School who later worked 24 years for Washington County schools, including two as assistant superintendent. “But in the end, obviously, there were some issues that there was just no resolution to.”
He would not elaborate on the specific nature of the issues that arose.
The other finalist, Eleanor Smalley, said she appreciates the opportunity.
“This is between the board and me,” she said of her reasons for withdrawing her name, “but I would say I think that it’s very important … to have a united board together on issues.”
School Board Chairwoman Elizabeth Lowe didn’t have a comment about the situation Wednesday night, except to say that it sets the search for a new superintendent back to square one.
The school system is seeking a new superintendent after its former superintendent, Alan Lee, left to take a job in Alabama.
