Next time you need to buy a gift, downtown Jonesborough merchants hope you'll put your money where your heart is. Merchants in Tennessee's oldest town recently began their buy local campaign after several downtown businesses closed up shop.
Today you can find "Love Jonesborough/Put your money where your heart is/Buy Local" signs in storefronts up and down Main Street. Although tourists make up a large chunk of their business, merchants say they can't survive without help from the locals.
"The campaign is to remind people that we have a lot of nice shops right here in town and we want them to remain here in town," Jonesborough Art Glass Owner Steve Cook said. "It's just a little reminder in practically every store front to love Jonesborough and keep your money local."
Jonesborough Director of Tourism and Marketing Alicia Phelps expects more than 45,000 out-of-town guests to visit Jonesborough this year. She hopes the number of local shoppers will increase too.
"Without the local residents, the Town of Jonesborough really wouldn't exist," Phelps said. "This is where you live so of course you want your community to strive and be successful and without the community and people to come in, it's really hard."
