Several area colleges don't run background checks on all new hires

Some of the colleges in the Tri-Cities region do not perform background checks on new hires.

11 Connects began investigating this last month, after a Tusculum College professor was indicted for sexual abuse of a child in the mid-1980s in Lake County, Florida.

While doing the story, we discovered Tusculum did not run a background check on the professor when he was hired.

And Tusculum is not alone.  ETSU does not run background checks on employees.

"There's issues of what background checks actually pick up---depending on how wide you cast the net," said David Collins, Vice President of Finance and Administration.

Among other area colleges, UVA-Wise orders background checks for staff and temporary workers, but not faculty.

King College said it does conduct background checks, and Tusculum now does checks on some hires.  They are considering running checks on all new employees in the future.

Milligan College went further, implementing mandatory background checks on all new hires starting a couple of months ago.
