It's late in the fourth quarter for those working on Science Hill's new football stadium, and athletic director Keith Turner says they are running the two minute drill to perfection. "It will be ready,” says Turner, “I'm sure there's a couple of little things that after the game on Friday, we'll get together and evaluate and see if we need to do other things.” Turner says the finished project will be beyond even their highest goals. "It's turned out to be better than what we ever dreamed it would be,” he says, “we knew it would be nice, but it's turned out to just be a jewel for our city.”
Viewers called 11 Connects with concerns, after hearing they would have to pay for parking. Turner says they have over 2,600 free parking spaces. The only paid lot is at the turnoff to the Technology Center. That corner lot is $3, with the proceeds going to the Hilltopper wrestling program. That lot is behind the visitor’s side to the stadium. All other lots around the stadium are free, and those fans who bought reserved parking will be in a lot across from the main entrance on Liberty Bell Boulevard.
Turner says complaints from old Memorial Stadium will no longer be complaints at new Kermit Tipton Stadium. Bigger bathrooms takes care of one complaint, while the other biggest one was crowded walkways. “Students and youth were circling and getting in the way,” Turner says, “with this top loaded bleacher system, they have their own places to sit, the band has plenty of room to sit.”
And when the lights come on and the ‘Toppers take the field Friday night in their new crown jewel, Turner says there will be only one thing left to take care of: a Science Hill victory. “That will make it perfect,” Turner says.
Science Hill christens Kermit Tipton Stadium Friday night at 7:30 pm. Gates will open at 6, with an on-field ceremony where Coach Tipton will cut the ribbon on the stadium which now bears his name at 6:50 pm.
