Wings Air rescue pilot makes landing after experiencing medical problem

A Wings Air Rescue pilot was landed shortly after take off on Monday when he experienced a medical problem.

Mountain States Health Alliance Vice President, Ed Herbert, said the pilot took off from his base in Smyth County, Virginia on Monday to pick up a patient and reported experiencing what he thought was indigestion. The pilot's condition worsened and he made the decision to return to base.

Herbert said once on the ground the condition of the pilot deteriorated to the point that another Wings helicopter was called in to transport him to Johnson City Medical Center.

Herbert said Wings has strict guidelines on whether or not they can fly. The pilot's training and judgement of the flight crew ensured that no patients were put in jeopardy and the pilot received the medical care he needed.

The pilot is still undergoing treatment at Johnson City Medical Center.
