A Washington County, TN man is without a home today after losing everything in an overnight fire. Firefighters from three departments responded to Travis Hale's home on Old Stagecoach Road near Jonesborough late Saturday night. It took firefighters from Sulphur Springs, Limestone, and Jonesborough hours to put out the flames.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Ofifice, when the smoke cleared, firefighters blamed the fire on an electrical problem inside the home.
"Anybody that's got an old house like this, you've got to replace a lot of stuff," Hale said. "You've got to keep an eye on it. You better have your ducks in a row, that's for sure. It can happen really quick. I never expected this last night, never."
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, electrical fires in homes claim the lives of 485 people a year and injure another 2,305. The U.S. Fire Administration says faulty wiring results in 33% of all home fires in urban areas and December is considered the most dangerous month for electrical fires.
In Johnson City alone, firefighters say electrical fires badly damaged at least five homes in the last year.
