DCS building burglarized, confidential information found

Johnson City- Johnson City police are looking for the person who ransacked the Plymouth Road Department of Children’s Services building this weekend. According to the police report, officers believe a juvenile likely broke into the building to get the title to his car back. According to the report, that title was stripped from him after a recent arrest.

Although the title is the only thing believed to be missing, something even more valuable could have been at risk. DCS stores the personal information of its clients inside the building. According to the police report, the suspect had access to what officers described as “a lot” of confidential information.

Despite that access, DCS Deputy Regional Administrator Lucretia Sanders says the state agency does not believe the suspect made off with any confidential documents.

"The office desks had been opened up and every one had been gone through,” Sanders said. "There is a lot of paperwork here so we were very fortunate that a lot of information was not taken. We're very grateful. A lot of others things could have happened that didn't."

With that in mind, DCS Communications Director Rob Johnson says security changes are likely.

“It's too soon to tell what we'll be doing differently in the future, but to be sure we're going to be looking at some changes,” Johnson said.

Some of recommendations may come from DCS’ Internal Affairs Unit, Johnson said. Since confidential paperwork is required to be locked away, those investigators are now taking a closer look to make sure all policies were followed.

"That's part of the thing they'll be looking into is what kind of paper was in there,” Johnson said. “What kind of paper may have been accessible."

Although a lot of personal information is stored on a password-protected computer or secure server, DCS says some documents are kept as hard copies. However, Johnson says those types of documents are required to be locked away.
