While Johnson City police search for a thief, a local Sprint dealer searches for the phone he stole. According to Absolute Wireless Store Manager Joel Phillips, on Saturday, May 1, a man, woman, and baby entered the Sprint store on N. Roan Street in Johnson City. When they left, a phone was missing, Phillips said.
"While one was distracting us over at the counter, the (man) proceeded to check-out the phones as most customers would," Phillips said. "He used the child as kind of an interference while he worked the phone off the pedestal. After some time, unseen by any of us, he slipped that phone into the baby's diaper and slipped out the door."
The phone in question, according to Phillips, was a $550 live demo, which is able to make and receive calls.
"We're just blown away that people would do this," Phillips said. "Especially in this day and age when we have cameras all over our retail location and most retail locations that sell phones have cameras in them. This is not the type of technology that it is wise to make a theft with."
By calling the stolen phone, Absolute Wireless has been contact with thief. Meanwhile, Johnson City police are reviewing surveillance video from the store.
