Many people pick Bible verses to suit their own purposes, writer says

Michael G. Foth’s March 17 letter addressed the recent article: “Blame the victim: Religious leaflet claims ‘ungodly’ dressed women provoke rape,” published Feb. 28.

Yes, many people, not just Christians, pick and choose Bible verses to fit their own objectives. Even well meaning Christians sometimes use Scripture in wrong, hurtful ways. That’s why Christians should study God’s word (2 Timothy 2:15). Christians should always choose written and spoken words carefully.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said about himself: “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10). Just like our Lord Jesus Christ, telling people how to be born again should always be the primary objective of every Christian. Maintaining a Christian lifestyle is also necessary if we expect people to take us seriously when we present the Gospel.

The sins people commit are not what condemns them to hell. Rejecting the Lord Jesus Christ as personal savior is what condemns people to hell (John 3:16-18 and John 3:36). That’s why any written or spoken word regarding any type of sinful behavior should always include the Gospel message (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Sinful behavior, and sin’s consequences, must always be defined by God’s Word alone, not man’s opinion. Yes, Christians sin too, that’s why 1 John 1:8-10 is in the Bible.

Finally Mr. Foth, would you call the Lord Jesus Christ a “narrow-minded twit” because He said “... I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6)?

You also said: “if Christianity was so great, people would be knocking down the church doors to get in.” Jesus said that there would only be a few that would be saved (Matthew 7:13-14). Christianity is great!
