Louise Borden, an award-winning children’s author, will be visiting classrooms at Grandview School, Ridgeview School, Boones Creek Middle School, and West View School, on March 23, 24, and 25. She will also make a public presentation on the topic of “Family Literacy and Connections Between Reading and Writing” at the Jonesborough Visitors Center on Thursday, March 25, at 7 p.m. This event will recognize outstanding student authors from Washington County Schools.
During her classroom visits, Louise Borden will share information about her life as a writer, including her travels around the world doing research for her books. Most importantly, Borden will share her expertise with students. “I like to think that my picture books are almost songs,” says Ms. Borden, “because the sound of words and the poetry of my style are so important in the texts that I write. I work very hard at my desk, revising and revising and revising, trying to find just the right words that will be beautiful or fun to read.”
Louise Borden has written many award-winning books, including both fiction and nonfiction. Her picture book biography, The Journey of Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of H.A. and Margret Rey, was selected as an American Library Association Notable Book. Borden’s historical fiction piece, Sleds on Boston Common, received the honor of being selected as A Smithsonian’s Notable Books for Children. Other titles include Fly High! The Story of Bessie Coleman, The Day Eddie Met the Author, and The Greatest Skating Race.
