The state of Tennessee will soon replace the Longs Bend Bridge.
Town leaders had hoped to turn the old one into a pedestrian bridge, but the city can't come up with the costs - estimated to be over one million dollars.
The bridge will most likely be demolished as soon as the new one is completed.
"We've not necessarily given up the idea of acquiring the bridge and using it but it don't appear we'll be able to," said Surgoinsville city alderman Merrell Graham.
TDOT will include a five foot wide pedestrian walkway on the new bridge, which could begin construction in the next year.
