Its census time and filling out that packet in the mail can mean big bucks for the tri-cities region. The U.S. Census Bureau is already running commercials on TV and radio asking people to fill out their census forms.
"If we get accurate counts, then there is anywhere from 300 to 400 billion dollars that's going to be funneled into communities all across the Untied States," said Roger Kestner, Johnson City U.S. Census Johnson City office.
He hopes everyone will fill out the forms to make sure the Tri-Cities gets all of the money that's available.
"If we get the accurate count then that means we are ensured to get our fair portion of that money," Kestner said.
Curt Alexander is on the Elizabethton City Council. He knows what extra dollars would mean to the city, especially during these tough financial times.
"State governments have cut back, federal governments have cut back and city governments have cut back, however our expenses continue to go up," said Curt Alexander, Elizabethton City Council Member.
The money can be used to fix roads, improve schools and other projects for the next ten years.
The census includes 10 questions and only takes about 10 minutes to fill out, but that 10 minutes could be worth millions of dollars for the area. Alexander is encouraging every citizen to make sure Elizabehton doesn't miss out.
"We want to get our fair share of the pie and we won't get that unless we have people filling in their forms and sending them in," Alexander said.
U.S. Census officials in Johnson City said they are looking to hire around 1,200 people to work as census takers for the upcoming census. If you are interested call 1-866-861-2010.
