Candidates for president's job at VHCC narrowed to three

ABINGDON, Va. – The list of candidates for the president’s job at Virginia Highlands Community College has been narrowed to three, and all are scheduled to visit the campus in the next two weeks.

Ron Proffitt, of Wytheville, Va., is vice president of instruction and student development at Wytheville Community College. He will visit the campus March 18.

John Boyd, of Rangely, Colo., is president of Colorado Northwestern Community College. He will visit March 23.

Cathy Maxwell, of Lawrenceville, Ga., is vice president for academic affairs and economic development for Gwinnett Technical College. She will visit March 25.

When each visits, activities will include a community forum, held from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in room 605 of the college’s Learning Resources Center. Each event will contain a brief presentation followed by a question-and-answer session.

Laura Lee, chairwoman of the VHCC board, said the three were chosen from 75 eligible applicants, a pool that was first narrowed to 13, who were all extensively interviewed.

From those interviews, the list was whittled down to three, and each has gone through extensive background checks. The next phase of the process is the campus visit and on-campus interview.

“I think any one of them could step right into the position,” said Lee. “It’s going to be the college community determining which one is the best fit for the college to move it forward in the future.”

She said each candidate will spend a day on campus, tour facilities, be interviewed by students, attend the community forum and face a committee of college interviewers.

When the process is complete, the VHCC board will ultimately make a recommendation to the chancellor and board of the state community college system, she said.

Lee said she’s hopeful the decision will be made by early April – well in advance of the June 30 retirement date of current college President David Wilkin.
