Tonight, Bristol, Va., residents have a chance to weigh-in on a basic and important issue that affects safety and traffic flow in the city.
From 6-8 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Linden Drive, residents can view maps and offer opinions regarding a possible traffic light at Linden Drive and Bonham Road. Linden Drive is home to the Holiday Inn, numerous restaurants and the Cinemark Tinseltown theater. But when vehicles try to exit onto Bonham Road, near the Linden Square Shoppes, they often create a significant snarl. Safely turning across traffic is a struggle, if not an impossibility.
This intersection has been eyed for a traffic light for years, but plans were redesigned last year due to zoning concerns. Some residents were opposed because they feared that a nearby residential property could be rezoned for business and eventually a sprawling business would be built at the entrance to their neighborhood, Robins Circle.
Today, it appears that the residential parcel will remain residential. There also is growing support for the traffic light. Count us in with the supporters.
Adding this traffic light would make this interchange considerably safer and greatly improve traffic flow in a high-volume area.
We urge residents to come out to tonight’s meeting to see the maps, talk to the highway department planners and express their concerns or support. Road planners and city officials are asking for your opinions about your city. So share them.
