JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Nothing is more central to the work of The Salvation Army than providing the basic necessities of life to people in need and nothing is more essential to life than food. Whether it’s providing a hot meal for people off the streets or a bag of groceries to people to take home to their families, The Salvation Army makes sure that everyone that needs food in our community gets food. The recession has caused increased demands on the organization's pantry resources.
The Salvation Army distributes food to hungry families as part of their emergency assistance program that also helps with clothing, rent and electric bills. But food supplies at The Salvation Army have failed to keep up with increasing demand from downsized workers, female-headed households and elderly and disabled individuals on fixed incomes. Much of the need comes from working families who have a never-ending battle to stretch paychecks for food, medicine, clothing, shelter and gas.
Between March 1 and April 30 all donations received by The Salvation Army to help fight hunger will be matched by the Feinstein Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to assist agencies who provide food to struggling families and individuals. Donations that qualify for matching funds include cash, checks, and food items (valued at $1 per item or pound).
The most needed non-perishable, non-expired items include:
