A new report shows retail sales in the Tri-Cities region fell during the fourth quarter of 2009, which is also the holiday season. However, the East Tennessee State University Bureau of Business and Economic Research report predicts an economic recovery this summer.
The report shows retail sales fell by 3.6 percent in the Tri-Cities Combined Statistical Area for the fourth quarter. During this period, sales fell the most in Bristol, Tenn./Va. at 10.9 percent, Kingsport's sales went down by 5 percent and sales in Johnson City decreased by 3.5 percent.
The author of the report, Dr. Steb Hipple, says he expects retail conditions to improve by the summer.
