Bluff City, Tenn. -- Bluff City, Tenn. has no mayor today. Last week, Mayor Todd Malone resigned his position, and last night, Vice Mayor, J.C. Gentry resigned, as well.
Gentry called a special Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, which, according to Alderman Robert Miller, meant that Gentry accepted the mayoral position. Bluff City attorney, Shawn McDaniel disagrees.
The big question that remains is whether Gentry only declined the mayoral appointment, and remains an alderman, or if he accepted the job of mayor, and then resigned. That would mean he resigned the board altogether.
McDaniel will ask Tennessee's Municipal Technical Advisory Service for an official opinion on the subject.
Meanwhile, the city still does not have a mayor. The town's charter says that a majority of the board must vote to appoint a mayor from within their members. Gentry declined. And, based on Tuesday night's meeting, every other board member cited personal reasons for not wanting the job.
"It's going to take three people to decide who's going to be mayor," said McDaniel, "and until three people agree, then there's not going to be a mayor." He suggested that the other aldermen may feel pressure to step up and fill the role, knowing that there may not be a mayor until the next regular election.
Those left on Bluff City's Board of Mayor and Aldermen will convene for their regularly scheduled meeting, Thursday night, 7 p.m., at Bluff City's town hall. They can decide to vote to appoint a new mayor, if one of the current board members chooses to accept the role.
