An apartment fire displaced multiple people in the early hours of Monday morning.
The blaze happened at a four-unit building at the corner of Spring Street and West Walnut Street in downtown Johnson City around 12:30 a.m. The Johnson City Fire Department says the fire displaced at least six people. According to fire crews, two apartments sustained heavy heat and smoke damage, while the other two had only moderate smoke damage. Firefighters tell 11 Connects flames were coming out of windows and doors at the back of the building, but crews say they were able to control the fire within 10 minutes.
Firefighters say a preliminary investigation reveals that a tenant fell asleep on the couch while smoking, which caused a cigarette to catch a blanket on fire. Crews say the blanket then started a fire on the couch.
According to fire crews, all of the building's tenants have been relocated.
