ABINGDON, Va. – All three Washington County towns have a slate of contested elections after Tuesday’s candidate filing deadline. The town elections, all nonpartisan, are May 4.
Abingdon
Five people are seeking to fill one three open seats on the Abingdon Town Council: Bob Howard, Rick Humphreys, Cathy Lowe, Carl Mallory and French Moore.
Humphreys, the postmaster in Castlewood, is the son of council member and former mayor Lois Humphreys.
Lowe, who owns The Male Ego, a salon on Main Street, and Moore, a retired dentist, are current council members seeking re-election.
Howard, who works at Highland Union Bank, lost his seat on the council in the 2008 election, by just three votes.
Mallory, the marketing director for an industrial supply company, is making his first run at a seat on the council.
Abingdon’s five council members choose a mayor from among themselves.
Damascus
Jack McCrady and Maurice Parris are seeking the mayor’s job, after current Mayor Creed Jones declined to seek reelection to that post.
Instead, Jones is seeking one of three spots open on the Damascus Town Council.
Parris, a former mayor, was voted off the council in the last town election.
McCrady, also a former mayor and councilman, lost his seat on the Washington County Board of Supervisors last year by a handful of votes.
Jones has endorsed McCrady for the job.
Also seeking a seat on the council are incumbents Tony Bebber and Mitchel Greer, and challenger Don Morgan, who is a former council member.
Glade Spring
Voters in Glade Spring will be selecting among a three-way race for mayor. The candidates are Lauren Becker, Joe Roop and Town Council Member Lee Coburn.
Five people are running for one of the three council seats up for election this year: Buddy Hayden, David Louthian, Paul Johnson, Crystal Baumgardner and Patti Woolard.
