Johnson City, Tenn. -- For the first time in months, home prices are actually up... But at the same time, mortgage rates remain low for those seeking to buy now.
Federal and state governments and local organizations are working together to help families achieve their dreams of home ownership.
Since 2002, the Northeast Tennessee/Virginia HOME consortium has worked to get federal funding to the region, to get more people into their own homes.
Lucy Hagerty lives in the new Preservation Pointe development in Johnson City. Her income is from disability, and she only had to pay a five hundred dollar deposit for her new home.
"Zero percent interest, for thirty years," Hagerty describes her mortgage, "I tell my neighbors 'before you are my age,' which I just turned 62, 'before you are my age, your home will be paid for.'"
The Northeast Tennessee and Virginia HOME Consortium includes Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol Tennessee and Virignia, and Washington and Sullivan Counties.
HUD sends a million dollars each year to our region to build or renovate homes. Another new community like Preservation Pointe will begin construction in Johnson City this fall.
