ABINGDON, Va. – The Washington County School Board appointed an interim superintendent Monday night in a 5-2 vote, after the school system’s superintendent left for a job in Alabama.
Jim Sullivan, a former Smyth County school superintendent, will start in Washington County July 6.
Alan Lee served as superintendent in Washington County for 11 years before leaving to take over as superintendent of a much larger school system in Baldwin County, Ala.
Assistant Superintendent Tom Graves left at the end of April to take a job as superintendent of schools in Chester County, S.C., and the local School Board has since appointed longtime Washington County educator Foney Mullins who serve as assistant superintendent.
