The topic of school consolidation has long been a topic of controversy in Wise County, Virginia.
The current plan put forth by the Wise County Board of Education calls for the closure of all six county high schools in favor of three new schools that would be built on the same site. The Wise County Board of Supervisors was expected to vote on the issue on Thursday night but elected to pull the school consolidation issue from the agenda for a special called meeting on Friday.
Wise County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Perry said the consolidation issue has long been a divisive issue in the county and if the board of supervisors votes down the current plan the board of education will move forward with a back-up plan.
The back-up plan would close the three smallest high schools and combine them with the three largest.
