A summer feeding program is providing several meals each day for hundreds of children in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Executive Director for Abortion Alternatives and Women's Center in Elizabethton, Angie Odom goes out with several volunteers in a food truck. They provide free meals to children who otherwise might go without. The program started five years ago and continues to grow every year.
"I've been around the world and back, Japan, Philippines, but our help starts in our own backyard and people don't realize how many people in our own backyard need the help and they really do," said Odom.
Each child gets enough food for lunch, dinner and breakfast for the next day. Several children and their parents line up at the seven food stops around Elizabethton. Odom said it makes here feel good to see the many smiling faces when they arrive each day.
"It means everything, it's the purpose of the why I show up here everyday," Odom said.
Parents like Tim Reed appreciate what Odom and the volunteers are doing for the children.
"There's definitely some children up here that if it wasn't for these programs like this, they probably wouldn't eat lunch," said Tim Reed, parent.
An RV filled with food leaves the Abortion Alternatives and Women’s Center parking lot around noon and goes to the following locations Monday through Friday. Lynn Ridge Apartments, West G Street Apartments, South Hills Apartment playground, Arney Hill across from the nursing home and the tree house.
