Johnson City, Tenn. - Hundreds of middle schoolers from across the country came to the Johnson City area this week. They worked hard in the heat Tuesday, but it was "know sweat" for them. Yes, that's, k-n-o-w. It's a youth ministry summer service program of Christ in Youth.
Rising sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are working with local homeowners to do repairs on their homes.
The kids are learning new skills as they reach out and serve others. In religious groups at Milligan College, they're reminded how little things like helping to paint a house can really help out someone else, and give them hope.
"We're looking forward to getting to know Kelly (the homeowner) this week," says youth minister, Bob Wynn, of Greenville, N.C., "hearing his story, sharing our story with him, but then the two of us working together, a simple task like painting a house, is just a way that both of us show kindness toward each other."
About 270 middle schoolers will work on 17 projects in the region for the next two days. Next week, the repairs continues. The "Know Sweat" program will send about 300 high school students to do service projects and share in fellowship.
