Virginia Highlands Festival moving to Remsburg Drive

ABINGDON, Va. – This year’s Virginia Highlands Festival will be held on Remsburg Drive, festival organizers announced.

Held for years on the grounds of the Martha Washington Inn and Barter Theatre, it was confined to the Barter Green last year, where rain and mud put a damper on the festivities.

“We’re very pleased with the move,” said Bob Trent, chairman of arts and crafts for the festival. “This will allow our vendors more room and our customers a great deal more parking.”

He said festival tents will line both sides of the road, which runs along the railroad tracks from Cummings Street to Depot Square. Because it’s on pavement, there won’t be trouble this year with mud, he said.

While some events will be held in the Abingdon Farmers Market pavilion during the festival, it will not interfere with commerce or access on market days, Trent said.

He said the farmers market will operate as usual, “except we hope we’ll bring them some customers.”

Myra Cook, tourism director for the town of Abingdon, said she hopes the new location also will bring customers to downtown shops, which are closer to Remsburg than to the festival’s old location.

Trent said the festival’s street party will be headlined by Mustang Sally, a five-member country and blues band from Nashville, Tenn.

This year’s festival is scheduled to run July 24 through Aug. 8.
