Erwin, Tenn. -- Layoffs are coming to Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) in Erwin, just a few weeks after 11 Connects reported that the plant decided to shut down sections of its plant.
NFS and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) made the decision to halt work and implement new safety initiatives after unexpected safety concerns in October and November.
In December, when the decision was made, NFS hoped its staff could help with operation improvements, and remain on the payroll. NFS has now announced that employees will, in fact, be affected.
The 450 salaried employees will receive a pay cut, based on percentage, according to pay grade. Lauri Turpin, spokesperson for NFS says this means the senior level executives will take the biggest financial hit. 150 hourly employees will be laid off -- at this point, temporarily.
Beginning Monday, January 25, 2010, the 150 can chose to use a week's vacation, or start their unpaid layoff. The two following weeks will be mandatory and unpaid. The remaining 250 hourly employees will not be affected financially.
"Right now we plan to have everybody back at work following those three weeks," says NFS' Lauri Turpin. "We have a very clear plan in place, with training and certain work tasks that need to be accomplished."
NFS told 11 Connects it is working to complete necessary safety changes as quickly as possible. Company leaders will then invite the NRC and a third party team back to review the actions taken.
