Congressman Rick Boucher announced on Friday morning that the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, will receive a low-interest loan from the Department of Agriculture for 2.5 million dollars. That money will go toward the B-C-M-A's Cultural Heritage Center planned for downtown Bristol.
The center is in the planning stages, and will be built at the corner of Cumberland and Moore streets. The building that is there now, is the former Goodpasture Motors building. That building will be renovated, and become the Cultural Heritage Center.
With the 2.5 million in federal funding, the B-C-M-A is about two-thirds of the way towards its goal. Another 3.8 million dollars will have to be raised before the center can become a reality.
The Cultural Heritage Center will house a performance theatre, and state-of-the-art muti-media exhibits.
While contruction is going on, up to 60 jobs will be created. After the center is up and running, the Center is projected to employ up to 160 people.
The B-C-M-A says that when completed, the Cultural Heritage Center will see tens of thousands of tourists visit each year.
