The Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division is investigating a possible scam going on in Washington County Virginia involving house cleaning.
According to Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman, on two occasions last week a female came to the door of a county resident under the pretense of wanting to clean their house. The female suspect was carrying a box of Clorox wipes and wanted to conduct a free cleaning demonstration. The white female is described as being in her early 20’s approximately 5’ 4” tall and weighting 130 lbs. Her dark brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail. She was accompanied by at least one white male who stayed in the vehicle. The suspects were operating a light brown or tan colored older model van. According to one report, the female became somewhat argumentative when the elderly residents, who live on Rt. 58 in the Damascus area, advised the female they were not interested. A similar situation occurred off Morrison Road, also in the Damascus area.
“The probable method of operation would be that when the home owners agree to have their house cleaned, once inside, the suspects would separate to “clean” the home, stealing valuables while the residents are being distracted,” stated Sheriff Newman.
“Anyone who is confronted with a situation similar to the one described above is asked to immediately contact our sheriff’s office and have these individuals checked out.” said the Sheriff. “If you do not know these individuals, DO NOT let them inside your house. Also, any vehicle descriptions, license plate numbers, etc. would be helpful in identifying these suspects.”
“We want to do our best to protect our citizens,” stated Sheriff Newman. Anyone having information is asked to contact Detective J. S. Blevins with the Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office at (276) 676-6277 or (276) 676-6000.
