Unicoi Co., Tenn. -- No, the snow isn't over, which means, no, those road crew workers, who scrape and salt our streets, aren't getting a break.
Since the first snow storm hit weeks ago, Unicoi County's Highway Department has had all 24 of their workers busy. With more snow, blowing winds, and freezing temperatures, their job is never-ending.
The highway department sets its budget well before the winter, and so these unexpected storms brought unexpected costs. Along with over-time pay, the highway department pays for extra salt, extra diesel fuel, and extra maintenance costs.
"Resources very limited," says Unicoi Road Superintendent, Terry Haynes. "Our work staff's very limited, we have to swap off and make do with what we can."
Haynes says this is the worst winter he's seen in at least ten years. He said his crews used almost 400 tons of salt so far this year, and in 2000, they used only four.
