EDITOR'S NOTE: According to TDOT Spokesperson Yvette Martinez, TDOT's approval has nothing to do with the cameras themselves, only the permits for the city to work at the locations. Just like any other road project, TDOT first has to grant utility permits for the work, Martinez said.

Reckless drivers beware, the first red light cameras in Johnson City should be up and running by the end of this month. Johnson City police will give city leaders that update at tonight's commission meeting.
Crews are already busy installing the red light cameras at the W. Market St./State of Franklin Rd. intersection. That is the first of six intersections citywide slated for red light cameras, according to JCPD Capt. Mark Sirois.
"The cameras are intended to (police) unsafe driving behavior and to change the behavior of the public," Sirois said. "That's what we're trying to do and make it safer for everyone."
Sirois says once the cameras go live, drivers will have a 30-day grace period before the city begins issuing $100 citations. Although Sirois was not yet willing to reveal the five other intersections where cameras will go, he said police will share that information once the Tennessee Department of Transportation approves the locations.
All cameras are expected to be up and running by the end of April, Sirois said.
