Today, Boy Scouts of America celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Past and present scouts and Boy Scout leaders gathered at Sequoyah Council Monday morning to celebrate.

President of Sequoyah Council, Boy Scouts of America, Randy Greene, said the council's hundred year old program is and always will be a character builder.

"For most kids, it's a great outdoors experience. It's a great time to be outdoors, to learn about God, country, citizenship," says Greene.

The council's program director Ronald Cameron said in 1910, Boy Scouts of America was founded on three very distinct principles.

"Duty to God, duty to country, and service to others,” said Cameron.

Through the years, those principles remain intact.

"We teach scouts to make their community a better place,” Cameron added.

Scouts like Jonathan Carrier said they're constantly learning those age old life lessons through the tried and true Boy Scouts of America.

"Leadership skills, just how to be a good citizen, just getting to know people and unity. Just learning how to work with other people," said Carrier.

Cameron said the scouts program will continue to adapt to a new generation, but will always hold true to its principles.

"We're looking forward to the next hundred years. And I guarantee scouting will be celebrating two hundred years," said Cameron.
