TAZEWELL, Va. – A majority of the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors said no to a future of wind farms on their mountains.
In a 3-2 decision this evening, the board adopted an ordinance that prohibits tall structures on the East River Mountains. The ordinance was developed in the wake of an announcement a year ago that Dominion Power and BP Wind Energy are considering building 40 to 60 wind turbines in Tazewell County to generate electricity.
Combined with a similar project planned for Wise County, the wind farm plans represented a potential investment of more than $600 million in Southwest Virginia. Together, the companies projected, the two wind farms could have generated as much as 250 megawatts of power.
