(AP) - Virginia has decided to endorse a pilot elk restoration program.
The Virginia Board of Game and Inland Fisheries on Tuesday unanimously endorsed a management plan for Buchanan County. The plan is scaled back from an initial proposal that would have included Dickenson and Wise counties.
The plan calls for the stocking of 75 elk in Buchanan County and growing the herd to a peak of 400 animals.
At a hearing in Richmond, farmer after farmer spoke out against any efforts to increase the number of elk in Virginia. They said they fear the spread of disease and crop damage.
