Dry and hot conditions are expected to have an impact on wine production across Virginia.
"If it's too hot the grapes will shut down over 95 degrees," said Kevin Southerland, vineyard manager.
He said when it comes to the dry conditions, the big concern at Abingdon Vineyard & Winery is for the younger grape vines.
"You want to be careful that they don't get too dry, they are struggling to survive, especially if you plant them right in the middle of mature plants," said Southerland.
Southerland said the only thing that's saving the younger grape vines is the irrigation system. As for the grape vines that have been here for seven or eight years, they actually flourish in weather like this.
"They are pretty hearty and they don't mine the dry weather, but the new plant would definitely struggle during heat like this," Southerland said.
Even with the dry and hot conditions, this years harvest might be one of the best they’ve had in years.
"It will be comparable to 2007 and 2007 was one of our best years in particular on the reds, the reds like a nice hot growing season. said Southerland.
