PULASKI, Va. (AP) - A Pulaski woman has been charged with second-degree murder and felony child neglect in the death of her 3-year-old son, who died after she delayed reporting that he had taken an unspecified drug.
Town Police Chief Gary Roche said 38-year-old Lisa Hylton was charged Wednesday afternoon, several hours after the child's death.
Roche says the boy apparently ingested a Schedule II controlled substance, a category that contains OxyContin, cocaine and
methamphetamine. Police are awaiting confirmation of the drug from the medical examiner's office.
Police say Hylton knew the boy had taken the drug, but didn't seek medical attention for about 14 hours.
Officers were called to Hylton's home shortly after 4:30 a.m. on a report that the child wasn't breathing. The boy was taken to
Pulaski Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
