Johnson City, Tenn. -- Luckily, the rain held off this morning for the construction crew at the new Franklin Woods Hospital on Med-Tech Parkway in Johnson City. Workers arrive before sunrise to start their daily safety regiment. they start with a stretch and flex program, to loosen muscles before lifting and twisting all day. They meet in trade groups to discuss what they're working on for the day. They're reminded of safety precautions and hazards for each project.
As quality control foreman, Bill Roark said, "Everyone on this job site, whether you're a supervisor or just a general laborer is a safety person, everyone has a right to speak up and say hey, that's not safe. Correct that."
Skanska Group is managing the project. Senior project manager Dennis Georgatos says the stretch and flex program cuts down on soft tissue injury, and he's proud that while there are minor injuries, there have been no major injuries that stopped productivity at the work site.
"We want you to go home in the same condition you came in," said Georgatos. "We want you to go home to your families, your loved ones."
Construction on Franklin Woods is set to be done in July 2010.
