Helicopter Makes Hard Landing In Wythe

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Engine problems forced an Army National Guard helicopter pilot scouring Wythe County for marijuana plants to land hard in a farm field Wednesday afternoon. Neither the pilot, who was the sole occupant, nor anyone on the ground was injured.
The OH 58 helicopter landed in an alfalfa field between Wytheville and Rural Retreat, Va., around 1:30 p.m., Virginia National Guard spokesman Capt. Matthew Nowak said.
Shortly after the crash, the pilot was seen walking around the helicopter, which was parked in the leafy vegetation just off St. Paul Church Road. Its tail was bent, it had a cracked cockpit windshield and part of the main rotor was lying on the ground nearby.
The pilot spoke with Virginia State Police troopers before he was whisked to a nearby hospital for a precautionary check and then released.
The drug sweep was part of an annual aerial search for marijuana plants, police said.
