I am responding to letters from Joe Tolbert and James Canon published on Aug. 24.
Joe Tolbert’s letter cunningly implies that the Bible is very hard to understand. He states that the “serious student of the Bible” will encounter “problems” studying the Bible. God says that even the simple-minded can understand the Bible (Psalm 119:130). The language of the King James Bible averages at a fifth grade reading level. The “serious student of the Bible” must first be saved. Understanding the Bible begins there.
Yes, saved people have questions and misunderstandings, but God progressively resolves them through serious Bible study.
Mr. Cannon is a perfect example of an unsaved person trying to understand the Bible. His letter alleged several contradictions. There are only apparent contradictions in the Bible. Mr. Cannon’s alleged contradictions have sound retorts, too lengthy to expound here. I recommend “Matthew Poole’s Commentary on the Holy Bible.”
Mr. Cannon quotes Isaac Asimov’s statement that Bible defenders are all ignorant, uneducated, unimaginative and unthinking people who invade our schools, libraries, and homes. The following renowned Bible defenders dispute Mr. Asimov’s conjecture: Sir Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, Louis Pasteur, Samuel Morse and George Washington Carver. Thousands of scientists living today are Bible defenders.
Mr. Cannon quoted from Thomas Paine’s writing, “The Age of Reason,” saying :“...it would be more consistent that we call it (Bible) the word of a demon, than the Word of God.” Later in life Thomas Paine said: “I would give worlds, if I had them, if “The Age of Reason” had never been published. O Lord, help! Christ help me! Stay with me! It is hell to be left alone.” (From “ Faith and Freedom – The Christian Roots of the American Liberty” by Benjamin Hart.)
Thomas Paine stated in his last will and testament: “ I die in perfect composure and resignation to the will of my Creator, God.” (The World Book Encyclopedia Volume 13, page 6035.)
“...let God be true, but every man a liar...” (Romans 3:4).
